This biome is located in the northern part of the Northern Hemisphere and is in North America, Asia, and Europe. It stretches across Alaska, Canada, Scandinavia, and Russia; spreading through the Northern Hemisphere. In North America, there is a type of land called the Canadian Shield. The Canadian Shield has a surface of rock that blocks water from reaching the surface, and makes up a large part of the taiga biome.

PLANT ADAPTATIONS!
  • many trees are evergreen so that plants can photosynthesize right away when temperatures rise.
  • many trees have needle-like leaves which shape loses less water and sheds snow more easily than broad leaves.
  • waxy coating on needles prevent evaporation.
  • needles are dark in color allowing more solar heat to be absorbed.
  • many trees have branches that droop downward to help shed excess snow to keep the branches from breaking.

ANIMAL ADAPTATIONS!
  • Some animals have structural adaptations that help them survive in the tiaga.
  • Having big paws help distribute their weight, and help it move in the snow.
  • Animales that live there have a protective layer of fat that allows them to stay in their dens while the weather is cold.
  • Many birds breed in the taiga in the spring and summer.
  • As the snow melts in the spring, insects lay their eggs in the water

CLIMATE
  • The climate of the Taiga is very cold.
  • Climate affects the composition of the soil making needles decompose slower, which makes rich soil develop more slowly.
  • Temperatures can drop below - 60 degrees C (- 76 degrees F) in winter.
  • The lowest temperature ever recorded was - 90 degrees F.
  • Commonly weather rises above 104 degrees F (40 degrees C) in the summer.
  • It can rise up 180 degrees F (82 degrees C). Due to such harsh weather there are few people and animals living in the Taiga.
